The children wonder about who helped their myopic father with discovering teh landmarks. Theri parents are thus fading into a forgotten past. The children are losing the memories of their parents. Memory is then the only way of understanding the past and when the memory fades the past is forgotten. Neither Ada or Everard read and it is unlikely that their parents did either. (view spoiler) [I think that the novel is emphasizing that the children live in a preliterate society and that the story of the drowned sailor brother is describing how foundational myths are created in such societies to explain the world and its happenings. ![]()
